A quality spill is a confirmed escape of nonconforming or suspect parts into the customer stream, at the plant, in transit, or already on the line. The moment a spill is confirmed, the clock starts: how fast and how completely you contain it decides whether this stays a small event or becomes controlled shipping and a damaged scorecard. The first response matters more than the root cause at this stage.
Contain everywhere the parts could be
Suspect parts live in more places than people expect: finished goods at your dock, product in transit, stock at the plant, parts already installed, and sometimes service inventory. A real containment identifies and secures every one of those locations and stops any further shipment of unverified stock. Partial containment that misses one location is why spills reappear a week later as a repeat escape.
Label everything clearly as suspect, certified, or rejected, and keep a running count so you can prove exactly what was checked and what was found.
Confirm the concern before you sort
Before crews start inspecting, pin down the exact defect, the affected part numbers, and the suspect date or lot range with the customer. Sorting to the wrong criteria wastes the most valuable hours you have and can let real defects through. A tight, written inspection standard with boundary samples keeps every inspector judging the same way.
Move fast with local crews
Spill response is a speed game. A local, independent crew can be certifying stock the same hour, while a provider dispatched from out of state is still traveling. Fast, documented containment is also what keeps a spill from escalating into CS1 or CS2, because it shows the customer the risk is already controlled. Once parts are secure, the 8D and root cause work can proceed without more product leaking to the line.
